ABSTRACT
Diarrhea is a serious public health problem, one of the causes of diarrhea is an infection of the digestive tract by Escherichia coli bacteria. An antibacterial source should be sought one of them by utilizing the onion hair (Allium chinense G. Don). The purpose of this research is to know the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of hair onion bulb against Escherichia coli bacteria. The research is experimental research. The research includes sample preparation, determination, extraction, phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity test. Antibacterial activity test was using disc diffusion method with concentration of 100mg/ml, 300mg/ml and 500mg/ml. Positive control was tetracycline with concentration 20mg/ml and negative control was dimethyl sulfoxide 10mg/ml. Analysis data using One Way Anova statistical analysis. The results showed the extract of hair onion bulb ethanol contain secondary metabolite compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins. Inhibited zone formed at concentrations of 100mg/ml, 300mg/ml and 500mg/ml respectively of 21.83mm; 22.05mm and 22.36 while the positive control of 20mg/ml was 39.5mm. Research showed the extract of Allium chinense bulb ethanol has a very strong potency in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. Based on the measurement data was statistically analyzed by One Way Anova test showed that there was significant difference from treatment result on antibacterial inhibition respective concentration because p=0,000 ( < 0,005).
Key words : Allium chinense G. Don, antibacterial activity, Eschericia coli
