Bay plants (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp) are medicinal plants
that have been used for generations as traditional medicines by the community.
The part of the bay plant that is widely used is the leaf. Bay plants have secondary
metabolite compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and
steroids. The right drying method is needed to obtain good bay leaf simplisia so
that it is expected that the simplisia is not easily damaged during storage and the
resulting extract has high flavonoid levels. This study aims to determine the effect
of different drying methods on flavonoid levels of ethanol extract of bay leaves.
The research conducted was experimental research. The sampling technique was
purposive sampling. The stages of this study began with plant determination,
sample collection, making simplisia with different drying methods, namely drying
in direct sunlight, wind dry, and oven temperature 50 ° C, making extracts by
maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent,, Screening of phytochemicals, and
flavonoid content test of ethanol extract of bay leaves using UV-Vis
spectrophotometry. Comparison of drying methods was analyzed with one way
ANOVA test statistics to determine the difference in the amount of flavonoid
content of the three drying methods. The results of flavonoid content of bay leaf
extract on drying using indirect sun (coated with black cloth) amounted to
2.3034% ± 0.085, drying with wind dry at 1.5711% ± 0.032 and drying using
oven at 2.7190% ± 0.078. The highest flavonoid content value is found in the
ethanol extract of bay leaves with oven drying method of 2.7190% ± 0.078.
Comparison of drying methods statistically ANOVA with significant P 0.00
between drying methods with flavonoid levels.

Keywords : Syzygium polyanthum, drying method, flavonoids.
